Nestled along the picturesque streets of Carmel-by-the-Sea, Chez Noir Restaurant delivers a refined dining experience that blends classic French technique with a modern California sensibility. Known for its seasonal tasting menus and intimate setting, Chez Noir has become a must-visit destination for fine dining in Carmel. We dined here on September 5, 2025. From start to finish, the experience felt thoughtfully curated and undeniably special.

Ambiance & Service
From the moment you walk through the door, the ambiance sets the tone. Soft, moody lighting combined with understated décor creates an elegant yet welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, the dining room feels intimate without being restrictive. Thus, it’s ideal for romantic evenings and celebratory dinners.
Equally important, the service was polished and attentive throughout the evening. The staff demonstrated strong knowledge of the menu and wine list, offering thoughtful recommendations when needed. Meanwhile, water glasses were consistently refilled, courses arrived seamlessly, and plates were cleared with quiet efficiency. This enhanced the overall flow of the meal without ever feeling rushed.
Culinary Highlights
At the heart of Chez Noir Carmel-by-the-Sea is a commitment to fresh, seasonal, and locally sourced ingredients. Each dish felt intentional, beautifully presented, and layered with flavor.
To begin, we enjoyed the Caviar Funnel Cake, a playful yet elevated starter that balanced briny caviar with the subtle sweetness of sweet potato. As a result, it set the stage perfectly for what followed.
Our courses included:
- Monterey Halibut Carpaccio
Featuring locally caught halibut paired with rose apple, celery, and French sorrel. This dish was light, refreshing, and delicately citrus-forward. - Costata Romano Zucchini Tortelli
Filled with marjoram, almonds, and squash blossom, then finished with a saffron jus. This pasta course was both visually stunning and deeply aromatic. It offered richness without heaviness. - Rosewood Ranch Wagyu “à la Joe Beef” (+$55 supplement)
Undoubtedly one of the evening’s highlights, this wagyu filet was served with duck liver terrine, summer legumes, and lovage. While indulgent, it was exceptionally balanced and well worth the supplement. - Baba au Rhum
Finally, dessert delivered a memorable finish. This rum-soaked cake, infused with French rum and topped with Mara des Bois strawberry, rose geranium, and chantilly cream. It was light, fragrant, and perfectly composed.
In addition, the wine list at Chez Noir is extensive and thoughtfully curated. It features both California producers and classic French selections. With guidance from the sommelier, we opted for the $95 wine pairing. It complemented each course beautifully and elevated the overall dining experience.
A Few Things to Note
While the experience was overwhelmingly positive, there were a couple of minor considerations. Initially, the pacing during the appetizer course felt slightly rushed. Later in the evening, as the dining room filled, the noise level increased, making conversation somewhat more challenging. We were originally sat next to the door. As tables cleared out, we were moved to a corner booth for the dessert course.

Final Thoughts
Overall, Chez Noir Restaurant in Carmel-by-the-Sea delivers an exceptional fine-dining experience ideal for special occasions, anniversaries, or anyone seeking elevated French-inspired cuisine on the Central Coast. Thanks to its focus on seasonal ingredients, elegant presentation, attentive service, and a standout wine program, Chez Noir easily ranks among the best restaurants in Carmel.
If you’re planning a visit, we highly recommend making a reservation at Chez Noir, located at 5th Avenue between Dolores and San Carlos Street, Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA 93921. Without question, it’s a dining experience you won’t soon forget.
