🍷 Start With the Carmel Wine Walk

Before diving into the cocktail scene, many visitors begin their day with the Carmel Wine Walk. Our favorite way to wander around the town.

With more than a dozen tasting rooms scattered throughout town, Carmel has become one of the most walkable wine tasting destinations in California. Vineyards from nearby regions like Santa Lucia Highlands and Monterey County pour their wines here in charming tasting rooms tucked into courtyards and cottages.

You can access the tasting passport at the Carmel-by-the-Sea Visitor Center, which allows you to explore multiple wineries at a discounted rates.

Once you’ve had your fill of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, it’s time to explore Carmel’s bars and cocktail spots.

🍸 Foray – A Modern Cocktail Lounge

One of the most stylish places to grab a drink in town is Foray.

This sleek yet cozy cocktail bar brings a modern vibe to Carmel’s otherwise historic downtown. The drinks here are creative and beautifully presented, often featuring seasonal ingredients and house-made syrups.

Expect inventive cocktails, excellent wine, and a relaxed lounge atmosphere perfect for starting—or ending—your night out.

If you’re looking for something a little elevated compared to the traditional pubs in town, Foray is the spot.

Foray is also an excellent spot to wait for your table at Chez Noir if your are not able to score one of the limited spaces in their bar. Read about our experience at Carmel-by-the-Sea’s only one of two Michelin restaurants.

🍺 Hog’s Breath Inn – A Carmel Classic

For something more historic (and a little rowdier), head to Hog’s Breath Inn.

Originally opened by actor Clint Eastwood, this legendary Carmel watering hole has been serving drinks since the 1970s.

The courtyard patio with fire places is one of the best places in town to relax with:

  • A cold beer
  • A glass of California wine
  • A classic cocktail

It’s lively, welcoming, and a quintessential Carmel experience. We are repeat customers here!

🍷 Mission Ranch Restaurant & Bar – Sunset With a View

For one of the most scenic places to grab a drink near Carmel, visit Mission Ranch Restaurant & Bar.

Located just outside downtown, this historic property was saved and restored by Clint Eastwood and offers stunning views of the surrounding meadows and the Pacific Ocean.

The bar is known for:

  • Classic cocktails
  • A solid California wine list
  • One of the best sunset views in the area

If you time it right, you might even catch live piano music inside the bar while watching the sun dip toward the ocean.

🍸 Bud’s at La Playa – Elegant Coastal Cocktails

For a refined cocktail experience, head to Bud’s at La Playa, located inside the beautiful La Playa Hotel.

Bud’s has an old-school lounge feel with classic cocktails, comfortable seating, and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where you can sip a martini or glass of champagne before dinner.

The outdoor patio is especially lovely in the evening.

🍷 Vesuvio – Rooftop Drinks in Carmel

Another fun stop for drinks is Vesuvio.

This Italian restaurant and wine bar has one of the few rooftop patios in Carmel, making it a great place to enjoy a glass of wine or a spritz on a warm evening.

Their wine list leans heavily Italian, which is a nice change if you’ve already spent the afternoon tasting California wines.

🍹 A Perfect Carmel Bar-Hopping Route

One of the best things about drinking in Carmel is that everything is walkable.

A perfect evening might look like this:

  1. Start with the Carmel Wine Walk tasting rooms
  2. Cocktails at Foray
  3. Dinner and drinks at Hog’s Breath Inn
  4. A nightcap at Bud’s at La Playa

Or head to Mission Ranch for sunset drinks before returning downtown.
