If you love wine and charming coastal towns, Carmel-by-the-Sea might be one of the most enjoyable wine tasting destinations in Monterey County.
Unlike traditional wine regions where you drive between vineyards, Carmel offers something unique: dozens of tasting rooms located within a few walkable blocks. That means you can spend the afternoon wandering through the village, stopping for tastings along the way.
Even better, visitors can sign into Wine Walk tasting pass that makes exploring the town’s wineries simple and affordable.
Sign into the Carmel Wine Walk Pass
One of the easiest ways to experience the Carmel wine scene is to sign into the Wine Walk from the Carmel-by-the-Sea Visitor Center.
The pass has recently been reimagined. The previous pass was prepaid and included tastings at about a dozen wineries with a year to complete the journey. Now the pass is free and offers exclusive discounts and special deals. The new format now does not encourage the need to complete the card in a day or a weekend, which is quite a lot of wine.
Benefits of the pass include:
- Sampling wines from several Monterey County wineries
- Exploring Carmel’s charming streets while tasting wine
- Saving money if you plan to visit multiple tasting rooms

The relaxed atmosphere makes it a great place to start your Carmel wine tasting adventure. Don’t miss the photo opportunity in the copper bathtub.

Cypress Grove Cellars
If you enjoy bold reds -which we do, Cypress Grove Cellars, previously Manzoni Cellars is worth a visit. This boutique winery focuses on small-production wines, especially Cabernet Sauvignon and complex red blends.
Their intimate tasting room allows visitors to learn more about the wines directly from knowledgeable staff.

Blair Estate sources its grapes from estate vineyards in the Arroyo Seco AVA, a region known for warm days and cool nights that create beautifully balanced wines.
Expect a lineup that includes Syrah, Pinot Noir, and crisp white wines.

Scheid Vineyards Tasting Room
Scheid Vineyards is one of the largest family-owned wineries in Monterey County, yet their Carmel tasting room still feels intimate and relaxed.
Visitors can sample wines from across the region, including:
- Pinot Noir
- Chardonnay

Chalone Vineyards Tasting Room
A visit to Chalone Vineyards is a chance to taste wines from one of California’s most historic vineyard sites. The winery’s estate vineyards sit high in the Chalone AVA, where limestone-rich soils produce distinctive wines.
Chalone is particularly known for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which often show bright acidity and mineral character.
The Carmel tasting room allows visitors to experience these historic wines without traveling inland to the vineyard itself. They did ask if we had a reservation, which we did not, but quickly made one for us and started our tasting.

Why Carmel is Perfect for Wine Lovers
Wine tasting in Carmel-by-the-Sea offers a very different experience compared to visiting larger wine regions like Napa Valley or Sonoma County.
Instead of spending the day driving between vineyards, you can simply stroll through town and discover tasting rooms tucked between art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants.
The result is a relaxed, spontaneous wine tasting experience that feels perfectly suited to a coastal getaway.
