Where to Eat in Carmel-by-the-Sea: Our Favorite Restaurants, Bakeries & Winery

Carmel-by-the-Sea may be known for its storybook cottages, coastal views, and charming village streets… but let’s be honest: the food alone is worth the trip.

On our most recent Carmel getaway, we ate our way through everything from cozy breakfast patios and fresh seafood shacks to Michelin-starred dining and wine country afternoons.

If you’re planning your own Carmel weekend, here are all the places we tried — and exactly what we’d order again.

🍩 Dutch Door Donuts

Carmel Plaza

If you do one thing in Carmel before 10 a.m., make it this: get a donut from Dutch Door.

This spot is tucked into Carmel Plaza and serves fresh, fluffy donuts that are somehow both indulgent and perfectly light. It’s the ideal grab-and-go breakfast before wandering Ocean Avenue.

What to try:

  • Classic glazed
  • Maple bar
  • Anything seasonal (they rotate flavors often)

Perfect for: A sweet morning start or coffee companion.

☕ The Tuck Box

Fairytale Breakfast Spot

The Tuck Box is one of Carmel’s most iconic brunch locations — and it looks like it belongs in a storybook.

With its charming cottage exterior and cozy patio seating, this is the place for a slow morning breakfast.

What we loved:

  • Tea service vibes
  • Fresh baked scones
  • Hearty breakfast plates

Arrive early — it fills up fast. Tipsy Terrier Tip: Cash only. There is an ATM a block away

🍷 Anton & Michel

Classic Carmel Fine Dining

For an old-school Carmel dinner, or lunch, with timeless charm, Anton & Michel is a must.

Located in a historic building downtown, this French-inspired restaurant feels elegant but welcoming — perfect for a date night or special occasion meal.

Standout dishes:

  • Steak and classic sauces
  • Fresh seafood entrées
  • Decadent desserts

It’s one of those places that feels very “Carmel” in the best way.

🍇 Folktale Winery

Wine Tasting Worth the Drive

A Carmel food guide wouldn’t be complete without a winery stop — and Folktale Winery is one of our favorites in the area.

The setting is stunning, the wines are approachable, and the whole experience feels like a relaxed escape.

Perfect for: A leisurely afternoon of wine, gardens, and small bites.

🌟 Chez Noir

Michelin-Starred Carmel Experience

If you’re looking for a truly unforgettable meal in Carmel, Chez Noir is the splurge.

This intimate, elevated dining experience is one of the most exciting culinary destinations on the Central Coast — and absolutely deserving of its Michelin recognition.

Expect:

  • Beautiful seasonal ingredients
  • Artistic plating
  • A meal that feels like an event

Perfect for: Foodies, anniversaries, and once-in-a-while meals.

🍝 Peppoli

Pebble Beach Italian Comfort

Carmel does Italian extremely well, and Peppoli is one of the best examples. This spot is a short drive into Pebble Beach at the Inn at Spanish Bay.

Warm, cozy, and consistently delicious, it’s the kind of place you’ll want to return to again and again.

Order this:

  • Handmade pastas
  • Tomahawk Steak for two
  • A glass of red wine
  • Anything with truffle if it’s on the menu

👉 We shared more in our full Peppoli post here:
Peppoli Carmel Restaurant Review

Perfect for: A comforting dinner after visiting the beach or 17 Mile Drive. Tipsy Terrier Tip: Catch the bagpiper at sunset at the Sticks Bar, part of the same hotel.

🦪 A.W. Shucks

Casual Seafood Stop

Sometimes you just want seafood without the fuss — and A.W. Shucks delivers.

This casual Carmel seafood spot is great for fresh oysters, quick lunches, and that salty-coastal-craving moment.

Best bites:

  • Oysters on the half shell
  • Clam chowder
  • Crab sandwiches

Perfect for: A laid-back lunch in the village.

🥙 Dametra Café

Mediterranean Favorite

Dametra is one of Carmel’s most beloved restaurants, and after eating here, we get why.

The menu is Mediterranean-heavy with generous portions, bold flavors, and a lively atmosphere.

Don’t miss:

  • Lamb dishes
  • Fresh hummus
  • Greek-inspired plates

Perfect for: Casual dinner with big flavor.

🥐 Carmel Bakery

The Sweetest Carmel Tradition

No Carmel trip is complete without a stop at Carmel Bakery, one of the oldest bakeries in town.

This is the kind of place you pop into “just for a cookie”… and leave with a box of pastries.

What to grab:

  • Cinnamon rolls
  • Cookies
  • Fresh morning pastries

Perfect for: Breakfast, beach snacks, or dessert back at the hotel.

Final Thoughts: Carmel Is a Food Lover’s Dream

From donuts and bakeries to Michelin-starred dining and winery afternoons, Carmel-by-the-Sea is packed with incredible places to eat.

If you’re planning a weekend getaway, these restaurants are a perfect mix of casual, cozy, and unforgettable.

Our Carmel must-repeats?
Chez Noir, Peppoli, Folktale, and Carmel Bakery (always).
