Mister Jiu’s is one of San Francisco’s most talked-about restaurants, holding a Michelin star and a prime location in the heart of Chinatown. Known for its modern take on Chinese-American cuisine, it promises an elevated dining experience focused on seasonal ingredients and refined technique.
We visited in January 2025 and opted for the tasting menu with wine pairings, expecting something memorable. While the evening was pleasant, it ultimately felt underwhelming for the price.
The Atmosphere in Chinatown
The restaurant itself is beautiful. The dining room blends historic Chinatown details with a clean, modern design. It feels special without being stuffy, and the service is polished, friendly, and professional.
From an ambiance standpoint, Mister Jiu’s absolutely delivers. It’s a great setting for a date night or celebration.
The Tasting Menu: Creative but Not Memorable

The tasting menu showcased thoughtful presentations and quality ingredients. Several dishes were technically well executed and nicely plated.
However, most courses felt more interesting than impressive.
Flavors were subtle, sometimes too subtle, and a few dishes blurred together by the end of the meal. Nothing was bad, but very little stood out as “wow” or crave-worthy.
For a Michelin-star experience, we hoped for at least one or two dishes that we’d still be thinking about weeks later. That never quite happened.
Wine Pairing: The Biggest Letdown
We added the wine pairing to elevate the experience, but this is where the value really fell short.
Several pours were forgettable and didn’t noticeably enhance the food. A couple worked nicely with lighter dishes, but overall the pairing felt generic for the price. Two pours were Orange Wine which just not for us.
If you do go, ordering wine by the glass or choosing your own bottle may be a better option.

Is Mister Jiu’s Worth the Price?
With the tasting menu and wine pairing combined, this dinner firmly lands in “special occasion splurge” territory.
For us, the experience didn’t justify the cost.
San Francisco has no shortage of incredible restaurants, including other fine-dining spots that deliver stronger flavors and better overall value.
Final Verdict
Mister Jiu’s is stylish, well-run, and thoughtfully executed. The service and setting are excellent, and the food is good. We would recommend going to Empress by Boon instead a few blocks away for a memorable experience with a view in Chinatown.
But good isn’t always enough at this price point.
Our honest take:
A pleasant evening, but not a memorable one — and not worth the splurge if you’re choosing between San Francisco’s many standout dining options.
