If you’re craving an easy coastal getaway with ocean views, great food, and just enough nostalgia, a weekend in Capitola and Santa Cruz is hard to beat. This Capitola & Santa Cruz Weekend Guide will help you plan the perfect trip.
We spent two nights soaking up beach time, sipping wine in Capitola Village, riding the cable car down to a romantic dinner at Shadowbrook, and wandering the Santa Cruz Boardwalk before wrapping things up with brunch by the harbor.
Here’s our exact itinerary — plus where we stayed, what we loved, and what we’d repeat in a heartbeat.
Day 1: Capitola Village + Wine Tasting & a Classic California Dinner
Stay: The Venetians

We started the weekend in postcard‑perfect Capitola Village, checking into The Venetians, the iconic row of pastel beachfront rooms sitting directly on the sand.
If location matters to you, this is the spot. You can walk straight onto the beach, wander into town for coffee, or watch the sunset from your balcony without moving your car.
Why we loved it:
- Direct beach access
- Walkable to restaurants and shops
- Charming, old‑school California vibe
Lunch at Zelda’s on the Beach
After dropping our bags, we walked a few steps to Zelda’s on the Beach for lunch. It’s casual, breezy, and exactly what you want on day one of vacation.
Think seafood, cocktails, and ocean air — no reservations, no rush, just easing into coastal mode.
Wine Tasting at Overshine Winery

For an afternoon break, we stopped by Overshine Winery’s Capitola tasting room, the sign still reflects their previous name Armida.
It’s a great option if you love Sonoma wines but don’t want to commit to a full wine‑country trip. The tasting room is relaxed, friendly, and easy to pair with a beach weekend.
Bonus: you can walk here from most hotels in the village.
Dinner at Shadowbrook Restaurant (Santa Cruz)

Dinner at Shadowbrook Restaurant is an experience all on its own.
You start by taking a small cable car down the hillside, then step into candlelit rooms surrounded by gardens and twinkling lights. It’s romantic without feeling stuffy and perfect for celebrating something — or just the fact that you’re on vacation.
If you’re visiting Santa Cruz for the first time, this one belongs on your list.
Day 2: Santa Cruz Beach, Boardwalk & Wharf Views
Stay: Edgewater Beach Inn

The next morning, we drove a short distance up the coast to Santa Cruz and checked into the Edgewater Beach Inn.
It’s simple, comfortable, and all about location. Being right across from the beach — and close to both the Wharf and the Boardwalk — made the day incredibly easy.
Beach Time at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

We spent the late morning posted up on the sand near the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, watching surfers roll in and out while soaking up the sun.
Afterward, we wandered through the Boardwalk for a bit of nostalgia — arcade games, classic rides, and serious people‑watching opportunities.
Even if you don’t ride anything, it’s worth walking through just for the atmosphere.
Lunch on the Wharf at Makai Island Kitchen & Groggery

Lunch took us out onto the Santa Cruz Wharf to Makai Island Kitchen & Groggery.
Tiki drinks, fresh seafood, and views of sea lions lounging below the pier made this one of our favorite meals of the trip. It feels like a mini tropical vacation layered into your California weekend.
Dinner at Jack O’Neill’s Restaurant and Lounge
For dinner, we headed to Jack O’Neill’s Restaurant & Lounge at the Dream Inn, a longtime Santa Cruz favorite known for its cozy atmosphere and solid California comfort food.
It’s relaxed but still feels like a proper sit‑down dinner spot — perfect after a full day at the beach when you want something satisfying without anything too formal.
Sunday Brunch at The Crow’s Nest + Highway 17 Drive Home

Before heading home, we stopped for brunch at The Crow’s Nest, overlooking the harbor.
Big breakfast plates, strong coffee, boats drifting by — it’s one of those places that feels like a tradition even if it’s your first visit.
From there, we took Highway 17 back to San Jose, winding through the redwoods and officially ending our coastal reset.
